Social Event 2 - Tuesday 13th July 2010

Kelham Island Museum

Kelham Island Museum - taken by timo jazz, Flickr On the evening of Tuesday 13th July 2010 there will be a drinks reception at the Kelham Island Museum.

The museum houses the objects, pictures and archive material representing Sheffield's industrial story. The displays at the Museum tell that story from the "Little Mester" to mass production, skilled workers, revolutionary processes, quality products, invention and innovation. Located in one of the city's oldest industrial districts, the Museum stands on a man-made island over 900 years old. Inside the Museum buildings, you can witness the sights and sounds of industrial Sheffield through our exhibitions, working machinery, activity areas and event days.

Bessemer converter - taken by Jez Page, Flickr The mezzanine floor houses a transport collection. The collection includes the famous Sheffield Simplex car, built in 1920. Also on display are the Charron Laycock car, Richardson Light car, Ner-a-car motorcycle and Rolls-Royce jet engine.

The drinks reception begins at 19:00 and afterwards there is free time in which delegates can eat at one of the many restaurants in Sheffield. Please note that delegates will have to make their own way back to campus by bus or taxi.

The workshop organisers would like to thank Jadu, the sponsors of this year's drinks reception.

Maltby Phoenix

Maltby Phoenix Note also that there will be a display of rapper sword dancing from Maltby Phoenix, a young rapper team from Maltby in South Yorkshire, a small town with the distinction of having a working coal mine. At the DERT national rapper competition in 2005 Maltby Phoenix won the Open Class and achieved the unprecedented by achieving a higher score than the winners of the Premier Class (Sallyport) and thus won the Steve Marris Memorial Trophy as overall winners of the event. Since then the original Maltby Phoenix team have dispersed, with some going on to other rapper teams, especially Triskele and Smutt, but younger pupils at Maltby Comprehensive have taken on the mantle and the team competed at DERT 2009 in Newcastle.
