Institutional Web Management Workshop 2012:
Social Activities at IWMW 2012
For participants arriving on Sunday 17th June we will be suggesting a meeting place for people who would like to eat and drink.
We have been informed that the nearest pub to Pollock Hall of Residences is The Salisbury Arms which is a couple of minutes walk away (58 Dalkeith Rd, Edinburgh, EH16 5AD). As described on the pub web site, the pub serves food from 12.30-9.30 pm Sunday night and from 12.30-10.30 pm during the rest of the week.
If you don't mind walking a little (under 15 minutes) the following pubs have been recommended (it's a nice little pub crawl):
- Leslie's Bar, 45 Ratcliffe Terrace, Edinburgh, EH9 1SU. Also see Beerintheevening.
- The Old Bell, 233 Causewayside, Edinburgh, EH9 1PH. Also see Beerintheevening.
- Cask and Barrel, 24-26 West Preston Street, Edinburgh EH8 9PZ.
- The Southern, 22-26 South Clerk Street, Newington, Edinburgh, EH8 9PR. Also see Beerintheevening.
- Dagda Bar, 93-95, Buccleuch St, Edinburgh, Midlothian, EH8 9NG Also see Beerintheevening.
In terms of price and choice the Cask and Barrel is probably the best and best-suited for a large crowd. The Leslie is the most striking, unique pub on the list. Dagda is tiny, stone-floored and well-woirth a visit, through not in a large group.
The spacious and contemporary South Hall Complex, which floods with natural light during the day and features a cutting edge thematic lighting system for evening, is an ideal setting for Edinburgh conferences, exhibitions and poster sessions.
After the meal a ceilidh will be held. The Belle Star Band will be playing. As described on their web site: "One of Scotland's top all-women dance bands, The Belle Star Band have got to be unique in spanning three cultures - Scottish Urban Ceilidh, Jewish Klezmer and Canadian/American Contradance. Their great sense of swing, strong fiddle-driven sound and love of playing for dancing make them the glue in any social gathering.".
One Twitter user commented: "Sort of the female version of Madness ... Talent and energy and great music :-)"
Their photo suggests The Belle Star Band aren't your average ceildh band!
Afterwards delegates will have the opportunity to visits the many restaurants and pubs for an evening meal. A list of good pubs is given above.
