Institutional Web Management Workshop 2009
Network access at the University of Essex
Delegates will be able to access networks via wireless and the use of PC labs.
Wireless Availability
The University's wireless network is available in a number of locations that may be used by the Institutional Web Management Workshop, including, but not limited to, the following:
- The Ivor Crewe Lecture Hall: foyer, LHA, LHB and seminar room;
- The Constable Building foyer, I-Lab and I-Lab break-out area;
- Permanent catering facilities, including the Blues Café, Café Mondo, Sizzlers Restaurant, Sub-Zero and the Happy Days Diner;
- The Computing Service Help Desk;
- The Albert Sloman Library large reading room and light-well area;
- The Lecture Theatre Building foyer;
- Wivenhoe House Hotel public areas (including conference rooms) and all guest rooms;
- Coverage also spreads out into the surrounding areas, most notably the public squares. Access to the wireless network
Eduroam
Users from institutions that have signed up to Eduroam can log onto the Essex wireless network by selecting the 'eduroam' network and authenticating with their normal log-in credentials (usually a full email address, eg jobloggs@essex.ac.uk), and leaving the 'domain' field blank. Other IWMW attendees can log on by selecting the 'eduroam' network and authenticating with their conference computing username (eg 'conf001', with or without the @essex.ac.uk) and password. Users may need to reconfigure their wireless configuration slightly, as follows:
Summary of settings required:
SSID: | eduroam |
Encryption: | WPA2 Enterprise / AES |
Authentication: | Protected EAP (PEAP) |
Trusted Root Authority: | GTE CyberTrust Global Root |
Certificate validation: | jrsrad.essex.ac.uk |
Further information on Eduroam at Essex is available from the University of Essex Web site. This includes guides to configuration for Windows XP, Vista, iPhone, Windows Mobile, Ubuntu Linux and Mac OSX.
If you need initial assistance in connecting to Eduroam, connect to Essex Wireless Setup and launch a Web browser - this will help in finding details for setting up Eduroam.
Network access in accommodation
Ethernet connections, with cables, are available in each study-bedroom. To log on, simply connect the cable and authenticate via Eduroam, either with your own account details (if your institution has signed up to Eduroam) or using your conference computing account.
Network access from PC labs
Network access is also available from the University's open-access computing labs. Most labs are booked out for teaching during IWMW, but Lab C (next to the Computing Help Desk, just of square 4) is available 24/7. To use the PCs here, log on with your conference computing account.
